River in the forest under a blue sky

Fords through the Harz rivers, where there were usually also small farms with horses to provide fords, were protected by small castles. One such protective castle for the ford through the Rappbode was the Trageburg, referred to as Draburg in a document from 1654.

The best starting point is the hiking parking lot in the center of Trautenstein. Follow the Harzklub Zweigverein signposts along the right bank of the Rappbode and after a short climb you will reach Trageburg Castle. It is advisable to include HWN 56 Rappbodeblick Trautenstein in the hike by crossing the dam wall and hiking back on the other side of the reservoir. This tour is 8 km long, offers many beautiful views of the Rappbode reservoir and partly follows the Harz Witches’ Trail.
