Harz border trail

The special stamps 9900, 9901, 9902 and 9903 are obligatory stamps for the “Harzer Grenzweg” and have a black, red and gold coating:

9900 Special cancel “Border tower Rhoden”

32 U 0612338, UTM 5763496

The Rhoden border tower stamp site is located in the Kleiner Fallstein — a nature reserve in the unified municipality of Osterwieck. The inner-German border has changed the landscape. A border tower was erected southwest of the village of Rhoden in 1975 and still stands on the same spot as a reminder of the division of Germany.

9901 Special cancel “Jungborn”

(N51 53 08.5 E10 38 46.6)

The “Jungborn” was the first natural health resort in Germany and was opened by the life reformer Adolf Just in June 1896. Water, earth, light and air — these are the remedies of nature according to eternal laws. These four primal elements, combined with the tried and tested meat-free Jungborn diet and a healthy, affirmative attitude to life, were at the heart of the Jungborn healing and lifestyle and were applied individually.

During and after the Second World War, the site was used for various purposes before the buildings were demolished in the course of securing the inner-German border.
The Förderverein Jungborn Harz e.V. has set itself the task of reviving the Jungborn idea.

The quickest way to reach the site is from Stapelburg through the Eckertal valley and you can continue the tour to the dam of the same name on HWN 1.

9902 “Two-country oaks”

(N51 37 00.7 E10 38 19.9)

The former inner-German border ran right through the middle of the two trunks of the two-country oak trees in the Ellrich municipal forest. A good starting point is the parking lot at the entrance to the town forest. From there, you can reach the “Spitzen Winkel” and walk along the “Harzer Grenzweg” on the former inner-German border past historic boundary stones to the “Zweiländereiche”.

9903 “Dreiländerstein”

( N51 38 29.5 E10 42 08.4)

The “Dreiländerstein” was erected in 1749 and is located between Hohegeiß, Rothesütte and Benneckenstein. This is where the lands of the Duchy of Braunschweig “HB”, the Kingdom of Prussia “HB” and the Count of Wernigerode’s forest area “GW” met. During the division of Germany, the stone formed a border point between the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR. Today, the stone marks the border between the federal states of Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony.

9905 Glass manufactory Derenburg “Hüttengarten”

(permanent special postmark)

The renaturation of the former glassworks landfill site began back in 2012. The layout of the site is radial and clearly structured. On the highest elevation there is a viewing platform with a special stamping station and a view of the Brocken and Wernigerode Castle in front of it. The entrance to the cottage garden is formed by an avenue of ornamental Japanese cherries and leads visitors to the glass factory directly to the variously scented rose beds, lavender oases and fruit fields.

9906 Museum of Natural History in Magdeburg

(permanent loan, subject to a charge)

The vast field landscape of the Magdeburg Börde and the mountainous landscape of the Harz Mountains with forests, caves and old mine passages are staged in the largest exhibition hall of the natural history museum. In the front area, important bird species of the fields, such as the buzzard, Montagu’s harrier, partridge and the great bustard, which is almost extinct in Saxony-Anhalt, are displayed in showcases. Stairs lead to a second accessible level which is surrounded by an artificial rocky landscape. The cast of an old beech tree 7 m high with its inhabitants, the black woodpecker and black stork, and the trunk of an ash tree tower over the rocks. Typical animal species of the Hochharz, such as mouflon, lynx and the almost extinct capercaillie can be found in the dioramas.

It’s also exciting for children. They can explore the extensive den of a badger family and be prepared for a few surprises. A raised hide offers views and information about hunting. Hidden under the rocks is an exhibition on minerals and fossils from the Harz Mountains, which commemorates mining in the Harz.

9908 “Kleiner Harz” Wernigerode

(permanent special postmark, subject to a charge)

One of the most beautiful miniature parks in Germany, the “Little Harz”, is embedded in the garden architecture of Wernigerode’s Bürgerpark.

Visitors marvel at the attention to detail of the models and are invited on a journey from the model to the original. Over 60 buildings of cultural and historical interest in the Harz Mountains are set in a fascinating miniature landscape with woods, watercourses and rock formations.

The Imperial Palace in Goslar, Wernigerode Town Hall and Halberstadt Cathedral are just a few of the buildings built on a scale of 1:25. In just a few minutes, you can walk from Goslar via Blankenburg to Wernigerode. There, the Harz narrow-gauge railroad winds its way from Westerntor station to the Brocken with its 5‑meter-high antenna.

The special stamp of the Harzer Wandernadel is located between the Josephskreuz on the Auerberg and St. Peter’s Church in Thale.

9909 Ahornpark Ilfeld

(N51 5820.9 E10 7760.8)

The Ilfeld Maple Park (Curie Park) has been a tourist flagship for the vacation resort of Ilfeld for several years. Around 270 maple trees have been planted in recent years, all financed by one or more tree sponsors.

An association has set itself the task of recultivating the maple park in stages and creating a natural park with as many maple trees as possible. The aim is also to turn the maple park into a natural garden landscape in which the residents of Harztor and visitors of all generations can find peace and relaxation.

9910 Treetop Walk Harz in Bad Harzburg

(permanent special postmark, subject to a charge)

Since May 2015, the Harz treetop walk in Bad Harzburg has been taking visitors up high. Young and young at heart, families, senior citizens and people with disabilities have the opportunity to get to know nature from a completely new perspective without barriers on the first treetop walk in the Harz Mountains and Lower Saxony.

Located at the foot of the Burgberg in the middle of Bad Harzburg’s spa gardens, the 1,000 m long trail starts at a height of over 20 meters and leads visitors through the old treetops of the Kalten Tal. Along the way, visitors learn about the timber industry, nature and the environment.

It is also unique among Germany’s treetop trails due to its geology station, which explains the rock strata of the Harz Mountains using a rock face. The trail also leads over a pond, provides insights into the Harz National Park and finally gives an insight into the exciting flora and fauna of Germany’s northernmost low mountain range. Of course, the lynx and wildcat, which have become Bad Harzburg’s landmarks, are not to be missed.

9916 Transall special cancel Aviation Museum Wernigerode

(permanent special postmark, subject to a charge)

Wernigerode, — Stamp collectors of the Harzer Wandernadel can look forward to a new special stamp: the special “Transall” stamp is now available at the Wernigerode Aviation Museum. The eye-catching green stamp box is located on the Transall “Silberne Gams”. An entrance fee is payable to obtain the special stamp.

“The coöperation with the Harzer Wandernadel is beneficial for both sides. Many museum visitors hunt for stamps in their free time or on vacation and can now add the special stamp to their hiking pass,” reports Mario Schmidt, Head of Marketing at the Aviation Museum. Christina Grompe, head of the Harzer Wandernadel service office, emphasizes: “The Harzer Wandernadel is gaining in popularity and we have gained a new sales partner for our hiking passes. When Mr. Schmidt contacted us last year, we didn’t think twice about implementing this project together.” The Aviation Museum now joins the ranks of other special stamping stations, including the TITAN RT suspension bridge and the Harzkristall glass factory.

9919 Special postmark “Heimburg forest nature trail”

Look forward to meeting Eduard the squirrel, Siegfried the woodpecker and a large, busy family of ants in Heimburg Forest. Together with countless other forest creatures, plants and trees, they make their home here. Small mushrooms and wood-carved forest dwellers point the way, which begins at the small parking lot with playground at the Bärenstein. After a short climb, you will find the first signs of forest life. You can even make music here, with various tonewoods inviting you to play your favorite wooden song.

Why does the spider have a web? And how does the telephone work without electricity? These and many other questions are easily answered here. A small raised hide reveals further forest secrets; a lovely picnic area invites you to linger. The somewhat hidden relaxation bench under the trees with a view of the swaying treetops promises a completely natural time-out.

Three adventure trails branch off from the main path and lead you on the trail of forest animals. The squirrel trail takes you to the highest point and namesake of the forest area, the “Bärenstein”. The little puzzles to solve are great fun. The forest adventure trail was created by the youth forest home “Am Lindenberg” from Blankenburg (Harz). If you walk all the trails, you will cover a distance of around 2.5 km to the starting point at the parking lot.

Friends of the Harz Hiking Needle will find one of the popular special stamps here.

For a slightly longer hike in the surroundings of Heimburg, the hiking tip “Rundweg Heimburg” with a total length of approx. 4.5 km is worthwhile. Enjoy the forest experience!

The Pastor’s Stone commemorates the Börneck pastor Gottlieb Friedrich Michaelis, who crossed the Heers here on October 31, 1821 on his way home from Heimburg. It was probably a rather cold autumn day and the man of God is said to have frozen to death here in the middle of the forest.
