Stamping point 140 / Eselsplatz

The Eselsplatz is located on the Harz Witches’ Trail on the so-called “Hundscher Weg” between Lerbach and the Sösetalsperre dam.

The “Hundscher Weg” is said to have originated as early as the 13th century as the “Hauserweg”.
It was the connection between Osterode and Harzburg until the High Middle Ages. The path served as an army road to Harzburg Castle, as a supply route into the Harz Mountains and also as an ore transportation route.

The grain for the miners in the Harz was stored in the electoral Hanoverian Harzer-Korn-Magazin in Osterode. From here, donkey caravans made their daily journey along the Hundscher Weg to Clausthal to supply the miners with food.

From Osterode, you begin the hike from the official starting point of the Harz Witches’ Trail at the “Bleichestelle”. Once you have mastered the first steep ascent, you will reach the “Eselsplatz” after approx. 3.5 km.

The shortest route to Eselsplatz starts at the Sösestaudamm and follows the Harzer Baudensteig, which leads steeply through the forest to the stamping point.
