Workers shovel dusty charcoal outdoors

Stamping point 60 / Stemberghaus Köhlerei

The charcoal kiln on the Bundesstraße 81 between Blankenburg and Hasselfelde is one of the few remaining charcoal kilns of its kind in Germany.

Workers shovel dusty charcoal outdoors

As you approach the Harzköhlerei Stemberghaus (500 m above sea level), you can smell the spicy smoke from the charcoal piles from a distance.

Next to the charcoal burner’s shop is a rustic, typical Harz restaurant in the “Köhlerhütte”. Food and drink are well catered for and instead of “cheers” they say “Gut Brand, Gut Brand, Gut Brand”.

We recommend a short hike of approx. 2 km from the charcoal burning plant to HWN 54 Rotestein.
