Stamp point 98 / Hohnstein ruins

The imposing ruins of the almost 900-year-old Hohnstein Castle rise above the small Harz town of Neustadt on a porphyry cone.

Konrad von Sangerhausen built it around 1200 and the heavily fortified complex became the ancestral castle of the Counts of Hohnstein. For over 500 years, the castle was home to a rich variety of life. After fierce battles and various destructions in the County of Hohnstein during the Flegler War from 1412 to 1415, the Counts of Stolberg took over Hohnstein Castle in 1417. In 1627, during the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War, Vitztum von Eckstädt destroyed this large castle complex in the Harz Mountains with an arson attack.

Since then, we can only experience it as a ruin. However, you can dream among the ruins and let your imagination wander through the centuries. Enjoy your time at Hohnstein Castle.

The inn at the castle was built in 1908 and extensively renovated in 2000. Under the motto “A guest in another time” , guests are treated to princely hospitality.

You can hike to Hohnstein Castle from the parking lots around Neustadt on well-signposted paths.
