The Sonnenkappe is a stream that meanders into the reservoir on the north bank of the Oderteich. The dam is located around seven kilometers north-east of Sankt Andreasberg on the B 242.

The Oderteich dam was built between 1715 and 1722 by miners from Sankt Andreasberg and is now operated by the Harzwasserwerke waterworks. The Oderteich was the largest dam in Germany until the end of the 19th century.
The Oderteich was built to reliably supply the water wheels of the Sankt Andreasberg mines with water via the Rehberger Graben, even during dry periods. Its capacity was sufficient to bridge a dry period of around three months. It is the largest of all the Upper Harz ponds and still powers several hydroelectric power stations in Sankt Andreasberg, in the Samson mine and in the Sperrluttertal valley.
The best starting point for a hike around the Oderteich is the parking lot on the road from Oderbrück in the direction of Sonnenberg.
We recommend using the circular hiking trail set up by the National Park Authority and getting to know the beautiful nature around the Oderteich. The stamp box is located directly on the circular trail.
