The “Selkesicht” is an excellent vantage point on a rocky outcrop above the Selke valley and offers a fantastic view of Falkenstein Castle HWN 200.
The Ackeburg was first mentioned in 1216 as the seat of the Count of Falkenstein’s castle men and has been considered abandoned or destroyed since the 14th century.
The castle complex, which consisted of a main and outer castle with a moat and several ramparts, had a 30 m wide main castle standing on a rocky hill on the Selkesicht. Above it, towards the highest point of the hill, stood an 11 m wide outer bailey and a village. Today, parts of the moat and rampart can still be seen at the castle stables.
Vom Wanderparkplatz an der Straße “Am Kohlenschacht” in Ballenstedt erreicht man über den “Alten Kohlenschacht” HWN 180 , den “Falkenweg” und die “Meisdorfer Trift” die Selkesicht an der Ackeburg. Ein kürzerer aber anfangs sehr steiler Pfad führt vom Gasthaus “Zum Falken” vom Selketal aus zur Stempelstelle.
