Yellow signs in the forest provide information about the water wheel and wheel chamber

The Heller waterworks, which consisted of 3 wheel chambers, several artificial ditches and a small artificial pond, used to be located at this site. The water wheels transmitted the power to the pumping stations of the Birnbaum shafts with rods up to 1 km long.

The light shafts in Hellergrund and Birnbaumgrund were the ventilation shafts of the “deep tunnel” through which the water was drained. The Birnbaum shafts were put into operation in 1536 and only closed in 1860.

The Birnbaumteich, which was created in the 17th century to supply water, is a popular bathing lake and has been given a reasonable infrastructure by the operator of the vacation park. A campsite with a modern vacation home complex and a restaurant make the Birnbaumteich an attractive excursion and vacation destination.

The Hellergrund stamping station can be reached from the Birnbaumteich pond or via the circular mining trail already described at the steel spring HWN 193, which starts in Neudorf and leads to the Glasebach mine via several stations.
