Stamp point 46 / Border Museum on the Ring of Remembrance

On the outskirts of Sorge, the “Border Museum Sorge e.V.” association has preserved a border museum with a border landscape. The aim of the association is to keep the memory of the time of the division of Germany alive and to pass on knowledge about this part of history to future generations using original objects and contemporary documents.

The open-air border museum contains the remains of the original border fortifications, which were saved from destruction by the municipality of Sorge. A history trail with information boards, the remains of border fences I and II, a border column, an observation tower, a water barrier and an earth bunker illustrate the border security system.

The landscape artist Hermann Prigann has created the “Ring of Remembrance” there. Referring to the view of “witches’ circles”, which is widespread in Harz folklore, the artist has created a large ring from dead wood, which collapses over time.

As the ring provides a good refuge for birds and many species promote the spread of trees and hedge plants with their droppings, new life will develop in this planting over time in conjunction with the approach insemination. Experts call such a plant “Benjes hedge” after its inventor Hermann Benjes.

The stamping station is located on the Ring of Remembrance and can be reached from the parking lot at the end of Eberbachstraße.
