The Hanskühnenburg forest restaurant (811 m above sea level) is located on the “Auf dem Acker” ridge in the Harz National Park between Osterode, Riefensbeek and Sieber.
Incidentally, the name “Acker” has nothing to do with the agricultural field — it comes from the Middle High German “agger”, which means ridge or rampart — which is precisely the geographical shape of the Acker ridge.
The Hanskühnenburg has been a hiking destination for countless visitors to the Harz Mountains for over 120 years. The first wooden Hanskühnenburg tower was inaugurated by the Osterode am Harz branch of the Harzklub back in 1889. In 1914, the wooden tower was converted into a stone tower and opened to the public. In 1974/75, the tower was renovated by the district of Osterode am Harz and the entire structure was extended.
The observation tower can be seen far into the Harz foreland and the south-western Harz Mountains. Whether in Pöhlde from the Rothenburg, from Westhöfer Wald or from Willensen, the Hanskühnenburg observation tower is a prominent point in the Harz Mountains. Between Osterode and Clausthal-Zellerfeld, as well as from Ravensberg and Hohegeiß, you also have a good view of the Hanskühnenburg viewing tower.
Goethe visited the Hanskühnenburgfelsen in 1784 and enjoyed the magnificent natural surroundings and the unique view of the Harzumland valleys.
From the bleaching point in Osterode, the trail leads over the Black Bridge along the fishing trail in the direction of Riefensbeek and from the pre-dam directly to Hanskühnenburg.
Another popular route leads from the Harzhochstraße B242, Stieglitzeck parking lot at the wind turbines, via the wide forest path Ackerstraße or the unspoilt Reitstieg with a wonderful distant view directly to Hanskühnenburg Castle.
