On May 1, 1464, Heinrich Graf zu Stolberg and the town of Wernigerode donated the 478m high Petersberg from their forest property to the St. Georgii Hospital in Wernigerode. The new mountain property benefited the many poor sick people, some of whom were also afflicted with leprosy. Very soon the mountain name, previously dedicated to St. Peter, changed in the vernacular to “der arme Lude holt” and from 1671 onwards continuously to “Armeleuteberg”.

After the construction of the fountain in 1905 on Försterplatz, where the Forsthaus has stood since 1928, the Sauerbrunnen manufacturer Karl Ermisch had a house built, which was opened on May 20, 1906 as the “Berghotel Armeleuteberg” with a restaurant and six guest rooms.

The mountain inn has been family-owned since 1990 and offers typical Harz food and drink in a sophisticated atmosphere. The “Wernigerode Fairytale Trail” was created on the initiative of the innkeeper of the Armeleuteberg, Chris Krebs.

At eight stations, boards with riddle questions refer to well-known legends and fairy tales. Following in the footsteps of Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel and others, children can collect important information about nature and the animal world in the Wernigerode Forest, each of which contributes to solving a riddle.

The fairytale trail leads over hill and dale, starting from the Hasseröder vacation park, romantically through the closed forest, along the course of the “Nessel” stream, up to the typical Harz “Hosenbeinwiese” meadow. It then crosses the Försterplatz below the “Armeleuteberg” forest inn and finally ends at the Kaiserturm — the highest point of the fairytale trail at 478 meters above sea level.

As a reward, the children receive a surprise and a special stamp of the Harzer Wandernadel at the “Armeleuteberg” forest inn.
