An expert opin\u00adion came to the con\u00adclu\u00adsion that this bot\u00adtle\u00adneck could only be reme\u00addied by build\u00ading a&nbsp;dam in an unpop\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded&nbsp;area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Work began in March 1904 with clear\u00ading in the area of the future reser\u00advoir. The work on the dam, which impounds the Kreb\u00ads\u00adbach, was main\u00adly car\u00adried out by Ital\u00adian spe\u00adcial\u00adists. The mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal was trans\u00adport\u00aded from Neustadt by a&nbsp;field rail\u00adroad. Despite a&nbsp;tem\u00adpo\u00adrary short\u00adage of labor and mate\u00adri\u00adals, the dam was com\u00adplet\u00aded in Octo\u00adber&nbsp;1905.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In 1922 and 1923, the dam wall was raised by 6.26&nbsp;m&nbsp;with con\u00adcrete and was com\u00adplete\u00adly over\u00adhauled between 1997 and 2001&nbsp;in accor\u00addance with con\u00adser\u00adva\u00adtion cri\u00adte\u00adria. Among oth\u00ader things, the two extrac\u00adtion tow\u00aders were rebuilt true to the orig\u00adi\u00adnal and moved fur\u00adther into the reservoir.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>As the stamp box is locat\u00aded at the west\u00adern end of what is prob\u00ada\u00adbly the most beau\u00adti\u00adful dam wall in the Harz, we rec\u00adom\u00admend start\u00ading the hike to the dam at the Hohn\u00adstein ruins HWN 98. From there, the sign\u00adpost\u00aded Path of Ger\u00adman Emper\u00adors and Kings leads to the dam and also cross\u00ades the \u201cHis\u00adtoric Post Road\u201d.
