The lime\u00adstone has there\u00adfore been extract\u00aded here in open-cast mines for around 100&nbsp;years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The lime\u00adstone deposits in the Elbingerode\/R\u00fcbeland area were formed in the Devon\u00adian peri\u00adod around 350 mil\u00adlion years ago. With a&nbsp;cal\u00adci\u00adum car\u00adbon\u00adate con\u00adtent (<sub>CaCO3<\/sub>) of 97% to 99%, a&nbsp;deposit of unusu\u00adal puri\u00adty, homo\u00adgene\u00adity and thick\u00adness was formed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>For many cen\u00adturies, the lime\u00adstone was only extract\u00aded for local needs or for man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adto\u00adry-type oper\u00ada\u00adtions, e.g. mar\u00adble mills or small kilns in con\u00adnec\u00adtion with the local iron industry.<\/p>\n\n<p>This changed fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly with the con\u00adstruc\u00adtion of the R\u00fcbe\u00adland Rail\u00adway from Blanken\u00adburg in the Harz Moun\u00adtains via R\u00fcbe\u00adland, Elbingerode to Tanne between 1884 and 1886.&nbsp;A&nbsp;large num\u00adber of lime works were built along the rail\u00adroad line with\u00adin a&nbsp;few years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>You reach the stamp\u00ading sta\u00adtion from the town cen\u00adter via Torstra\u00dfe and fol\u00adlow the sign\u00adpost\u00aded&nbsp;paths.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HWN 39 is locat\u00aded on the out\u00adskirts of Elbingerode at the Fel\u00adswerke open-cast mine.
