It was built in 1951\/52 as a&nbsp;reser\u00advoir. It was used to sup\u00adply indus\u00adtri\u00adal water, in par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar to pro\u00advide suf\u00adfi\u00adcient water for cop\u00adper slate min\u00ading in the region. The hydro\u00adelec\u00adtric pow\u00ader sta\u00adtion inte\u00adgrat\u00aded into the dam wall gen\u00ader\u00adates elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty from hydropow\u00ader and local recre\u00adation now also plays a&nbsp;major role at the 2.2&nbsp;km long and 190&nbsp;m&nbsp;wide dam. Although the con\u00adstruc\u00adtion of a&nbsp;main dam was con\u00adsid\u00adered, it was not realized.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The Wip\u00adper has its source near the Auer\u00adberg near Stol\u00adberg in the Harz Moun\u00adtains. It mean\u00adders for around 85&nbsp;kilo\u00adme\u00adters to Bern\u00adburg, where it flows into the Saale. The dis\u00adcharge capac\u00adi\u00adty of the Wip\u00adper is low, so that in its cur\u00adrent state even minor floods can cause it to over\u00adflow. The Wip\u00adper\u00adtalsperre has only a&nbsp;low flood pro\u00adtec\u00adtion effect.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>After the 1994 floods, which caused over \u20ac17 mil\u00adlion in dam\u00adage, the con\u00adstruc\u00adtion of an addi\u00adtion\u00adal \u201cgreen reten\u00adtion basin\u201d above Wip\u00adpra was dis\u00adcussed as part of the devel\u00adop\u00adment of a&nbsp;flood pro\u00adtec\u00adtion con\u00adcept for Sax\u00adony-Anhalt. Con\u00adstruc\u00adtion of the dry basin, which will be built on the site of the main dam planned at the time, began in July&nbsp;2014.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The stamp\u00ading sta\u00adtion is locat\u00aded on the 5.8&nbsp;km cir\u00adcu\u00adlar trail around the Wip\u00adper\u00adtalsperre dam, which is sign\u00adpost\u00aded from the dam wall.
