The first set\u00adtle\u00adments of work\u00aders in the vil\u00adlage of the same name were only estab\u00adlished at the begin\u00adning of the 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry after the smelt\u00ading works had been fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly ren\u00ado\u00advat\u00aded and rebuilt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In addi\u00adtion to sil\u00adver, the only gold found in the Harz Moun\u00adtains to date was smelt\u00aded here in 1825, as well as sele\u00adni\u00adum, a&nbsp;mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal that was only of sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic inter\u00adest at the time. The smelter was closed in&nbsp;1909.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The for\u00admer smelter site was tak\u00aden over by wood pro\u00adcess\u00ading com\u00adpa\u00adnies, which ini\u00adtial\u00adly also used the water pow\u00ader of the Selke to dri\u00adve a&nbsp;wide vari\u00adety of machines. After their clo\u00adsure in 1990, the Unter\u00adharz\u00ader Wald\u00adhof was estab\u00adlished on part of the site. The Wald\u00adhof offers expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adtial edu\u00adca\u00adtion in the fields of forestry, nature con\u00adser\u00adva\u00adtion and envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal pro\u00adtec\u00adtion, as well as min\u00ading and met\u00adal\u00adlur\u00adgy.
