The inau\u00adgu\u00adra\u00adtion took place on June 24, 1950 on a&nbsp;fes\u00adtive mead\u00adow in Bad Harzburg. On the fol\u00adlow\u00ading day, rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtives of the Lands\u00adman\u00adnschaften and East Ger\u00adman youth placed wood\u00aden coats of arms on the base of the cross and an urn with East Ger\u00adman soil was walled into the&nbsp;base.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>In 1962, a&nbsp;wreath of coat of arms stones was added to the com\u00adplex. The wood\u00aden coats of arms on the base had often been stolen by sou\u00advenir hunters or dam\u00adaged in some oth\u00ader way. From 1950 to 1964, the cross was illu\u00admi\u00adnat\u00aded by flood\u00adlights at night. Many ral\u00adlies were held in front of the cross to com\u00admem\u00ado\u00adrate the lost east\u00adern ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adries and the Day of Ger\u00adman Uni\u00adty. Over the years, the Cross of the Ger\u00adman East also ful\u00adfilled anoth\u00ader func\u00adtion. It became a&nbsp;land\u00admark for Bad Harzburg and a&nbsp;fixed point on the hik\u00ading&nbsp;map.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>On March 4, 1998, a&nbsp;vio\u00adlent hur\u00adri\u00adcane raged over the Harz mas\u00adsif. The Cross of the Ger\u00adman East was its vic\u00adtim. A&nbsp;sup\u00adport asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion was found\u00aded to rebuild the cross and a&nbsp;dona\u00adtion account was set up. The will\u00ading\u00adness to donate sur\u00adprised even the opti\u00admists, and the mon\u00adey was col\u00adlect\u00aded in no time at&nbsp;all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The new cross was erect\u00aded on Sep\u00adtem\u00adber 15, 2000. Around 3000 peo\u00adple attend\u00aded the inau\u00adgu\u00adra\u00adtion cer\u00ade\u00admo\u00adny on Sep\u00adtem\u00adber 30, 2000. Since the day of the inau\u00adgu\u00adra\u00adtion, a&nbsp;stone plaque has been placed at the foot of the cross with the fol\u00adlow\u00ading word\u00ading for infor\u00adma\u00adtion and to avoid mis\u00adun\u00adder\u00adstand\u00adings: \u201cCross of the Ger\u00adman East \u2014 Site of remem\u00adbrance of expul\u00adsion and loss of home\u00adland \u2014 Site of rejec\u00adtion of all tyran\u00adny \u2014 Cross of under\u00adstand\u00ading, rec\u00adon\u00adcil\u00adi\u00ada\u00adtion and peace \u2014 Con\u00adse\u00adcrat\u00aded on June 24, 1950 \u2014 Destroyed by storm on March 4, 1998 \u2014 Re-erect\u00aded and con\u00adse\u00adcrat\u00aded on Sep\u00adtem\u00adber 30, 2000.\u201d The new cross cost DM 180,000.     <em>Source: \u201cRemem\u00adbrance in bronze and stone\u201d by Klaus R\u00f6ttger<\/em><br><em>  Pub\u00adlish\u00ader: Harzk\u00adlub branch asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion Bad Harzburg<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>From the Burg\u00adberg, the mid\u00addle path, marked with a&nbsp;red tri\u00adan\u00adgle and a&nbsp;2&nbsp;in a&nbsp;white cir\u00adcle, leads to the \u201cCross of the Ger\u00adman East\u201d (555&nbsp;m&nbsp;above sea lev\u00adel) on the Uhlenklippe.<\/p>\n\n<p>Park\u00ading is avail\u00adable at the large park\u00ading lot in Bad Harzburg direct\u00adly on the Bun\u00addesstra\u00dfe 4&nbsp;towards Torfhaus.
